Lady Troopers upset district 2-6A Champion Midland for Bi-District Championship

The Lady Troopers' varsity volleyball team woke up determined to take home the golden volleyball trophy, and they did. The girls traveled to Alpine, Texas on Monday Oct. 30 to compete against the Bulldogs from Midland High School. The match went five sets and was tied until the Lady Troopers pulled through for the last point. The scores of the sets were 25-20, 25-14, 17-25, 22-22, and 15-12.

The match had ups and downs, but senior middle hitter Megan Custer held the team together with her powerful kills. Along with Custer, junior Caitlin Buettner  brought her quick kills with frequent blocks alongside Custer. Sophomore middle hitter Sasha Bajek and junior Kayla Soto both had breath-taking serves that had the team on a roll several times.

Bajek said that she was overpowered with emotions from the game due to the suspense during the fifth set and believes they will continue to do well as a team.

"I feel very overwhelmed, it's my first year on varsity and it's very overwhelming that we won," Bajek said. " The highlight of the game was in the fifth set when we were down 11 to 10 and we got it back, it was a great feeling. I'm sure we'll get it together again and push as hard as we can."

Junior Kelly Elliot said it was an outstanding game for the team and she is proud of how they became one and conquered. She also mentioned they will go farther if they keep up the same effort.

"I'm ecstatic, I can't believe we came back. It was an amazing game, our team is so good. We came together and pushed through every point. We fought for it and we ended up pulling through at the end," Elliott said. "I think we can go far and I hope that we can play to the best of our ability at our next game."

Coach Bajek said the girls stood together and fought for what they came for. He said they knew what was going on and they put enough momentum to push through.

"They stuck together, they battled hard," Coach Bajek said. "They knew their backs were against the wall, and they pulled it out really nicely."

The Lady Troopers will study their upcoming team, the Weatherford Kangaroos from Weatherford, Texas, for their game on Nov. 2. at Andrews High in Andrews, Texas.
