Eastwood High School's annual winter dance recital was held on December 1st and 2nd at the YISD central office. This year's theme being 'Once Upon a December,' most performances reflected the spirit of the holidays. The recital included winter performances by Saltatrix, Dance 1-3, and Folklorico, as well as Eastwood area dance groups including The Shimmers, The Sapphires, and The Sparklers, which are comprised of dancers aged 4-13.
The show contained 25 dances total. Assistant Principal Nina Price, who attended the annual recital, said that the winter themed show never fails to impress.
"At their winter recital, Dance does a lot of holiday routines that make you leave the performance in a good mood," Price said.
The recital began with Saltatrix, who have been preparing dances for the show over the past 5 months. Dance teacher and Saltatrix coach Sheila Dwyer said that this performance has been in the works since the end of last year.
"Saltatrix has been preparing for this since the beginning of the summer," Dwyer said. "The minute that tryouts are over in May, we start having practice right away and continue throughout the summer and school year."
Dwyer also sponsors the youth dance groups, and said that it is incredibly rewarding to see the young dancers progression annually at the winter recitals.
"It's neat to see the students from the Eastwood feeder pattern come together," Dwyer said. "It's fun to watch the transformation from these little four year olds all the way up to their senior year in high school."
Parent Maggie Martinez said that the performances not only give families a chance to see what their children have been up to, but they also give the dancers a chance to show off their hard work and skill.
"Recitals like this one are extremely important so that you can see what your children are doing in dance," Martinez said. "It gives families the opportunity to see them in action, to take pictures, and to just be proud. It also gives the students a chance to show off to you what they've been doing in class. Their performances are a reflection of all the hard work they've been doing".
The next Eastwood community dance recital will be at Eastwood High School this coming May.
