Varsity Cross Country Boys place Top 10 in State

The boy's varsity cross country team competed at Old Settlers Park in Austin, Texas for this year's UIL 1-6A State Championship Cross Country Meet. The race was broadcast live on the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) website.

Although the varsity boy's team was missing two of their runners, they still placed 6th out of sixteen teams. The course was measured as a 5k.  Senior Daniel Bernal placed 3rd with a time of 14:49.72. Junior Gabrial Armijo placed 40th out of 150 runners, with a time of 15:54.93. Senior James McLain finished 61st, with a time of 16:10.35.

Senior Dylan Godfrey said that the team is choosing to see their performance as a nice close to a wonderful season.

"We did really well," Godfrey said. "It wasn't our best performance, but it was a good ending to the season."

The team had two weeks to prepare after the district meet in Oct. 22. However, they feel that their practices from the entire year have served as the training they needed.  These past two weeks consisted of eating carbs, staying hydrated, and ice baths.

Senior Daniel Bernal said that vigorous practices thoroughly  prepared them for competitions.

"Most of us preformed well at state," Bernal said. "We put in more work because our bodies got used to the doubles [morning and afternoon practices] and slowing down would have just minimized our training."

The team is currently training for a well-known cross country meet called Nike South. They will race Saturday Nov. 19. Bernal said he expects a challenge because of the advanced nature of the meet.

"We don't know yet, because it is such a competitive field," Bernal said. "It's a place where anything can happen. We are definitely going to be striving for a top 3 finish and will be running as hard as we can."
