Behind the arm of Mark Torrez, the Eastwood Trooper football team marched through the Franklin Cougars Friday night, earning their final win of the season and securing a spot in the state playoffs.
The game kicked off with Eastwood scoring first in the middle of the first quarter with a 32-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Mark Torrez to senior wide receiver Erin Portillo. Franklin answered back with a touchdown towards the end of the first quarter leaving the game tied at the end of the first.
At the start of the second quarter, Franklin scored on its third possession, extending their lead to 14-7. The Troopers fought back throughout the second quarter to regain the lead. Torrez ran the ball into the end zone on their next posesion for a 13-yard score, and senior Manny Acosta ran for a 9 yard touchdown towards the end of the 3rd. The first half finished with Eastwood leading 21-14.
Eastwood opened up the third quarter with a dominant performance. Torrez found wide-out Richie Rodriguez on a 19-yard touchdown pass for 6 points. On the Trooper's following drive, Torrez & Rodriguez met again, this time on a 22-yard touchdown pass. The 3rd quarter ended with a score of 35-14.
Eastwood found the scoreboard again in the middle of the fourth quarter, with Torrez scoring on a 2-yard keeper with 8:36 left in the game to help the Trooper's secure their win.
Eastwood's top scorers of the game would be quarterback Mark Torrez and wide-reciever Richie Rodriguez. Torrez found the endzone 4 times throughout the game with over 200 passing yards, and Rodriguez had seven catches for 104 yards, receiving with two touchdowns.
Eastwood advances to the bi-district round of the state football playoffs where they will face Wolfforth Frenship this Friday, November 13 at Frenship High School.
