Troopers suffer loss to the Aztecs

The Eastwood Troopers and the El Dorado Aztecs went helmet to helmet on Friday, October 10 at the Socorro Student Activities Complex. The Aztecs won the battle with a final score of 41-34.

The Troopers took the lead early as junior Aaron Contreras ran for the first touchdown of the game. The two-point conversion that followed was unsuccessful which left the score at 6-0.  After a small struggle, quarterback Mark Torrez passed for 56 yards to junior Erin Portillo, who brought the Troopers' score to 13. Seconds later, the Aztecs came back for revenge and scored on the kickoff return. Still trailing behind, the Aztecs managed to score once again before the end of the first quarter.

Contreras ran in another touchdown only four minutes into the second quarter. El Dorado retaliated on the following possession and scored seven points.  As half time quickly approached, junior Richie Rodriguez  intercepted the ball at the El Dorado 4-yard line and ran it all the way for a 103-yard touchdown. The half ended in a score of 27-20.

El Dorado opened the third quarter with an interception return for a touchdown. Torrez ran for a 2-yard touchdown. The teams went into the last quarter with scores of 34-27.

The Aztecs were fast to catch up and scored halfway into the quarter. Tied at 34 points, the Troopers were looking to regain the lead. Unfortunately, Torrez suffered an injury late that would hinder Eastwood's momentum. The Aztecs scored again with three minutes left in the game. The Troopers played hard but to no avail and ended the game at 41-34. This devastating loss brings Troopers to an overall 4-3 record and 1-2 in district.

Coach Phil Barrios commented on the loss saying, "I think everybody put their best foot forward and sometimes you end up on the short end."

Senior captain Gregory Long is sure the team still has what it takes to come out on top this season. "I feel pretty confident that our team has the fire. We work hard everyday. These losses that we have are upsetting but I guarantee that these next couple of games you will see the Eastwood Troopers back in action with the fire."

Eastwood will play against Montwood on October 24 at Trooper Stadium.
