The Eastwood Troopers beat Chapin 37-12 Thursday night at Irvin High School's Tony Shaw stadium. The game began with the Troopers marching onto the field as their fans cheered loudly from the stands.
Eastwood led Chapin 9-0 early in the game. In the second quarter, quarterback Mark Torrez found junior Richie Rodriguez for a 40-yard touchdown pass. Chapin attempted to get on the board before halftime, but ran out of time before they could score. The quarter ended at 17-0.
The Huskies opened the third quarter with a touchdown, but the Troopers came back scoring two more touchdowns which put them in the lead 24-6.
In the final quarter, Chapin quarterback Leondre Williams threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to make the score 30-12 with 10 minutes remaining in the game. Troopers extended the lead with another touchdown, ending the game with the final score of 37-12.
"The team looked sharp, both offense and defense. We are happy with where we are, but still have plenty of room to improve. I feel like summer workouts helped us bond and grow as a team. We're looking forward to better things in the future." says Torrez, a junior.
"The crowd and Eastwood supporters help improve our playing. We perform at another level when we know that the student section and the rest of the crowd get into the game we love to play. Without the supporters, we wouldn't have the same amount of confidence going into games as we do." said Torrez.
The first home game of the season will be on Friday, September 5, against Canutillo High at Trooper Stadium.
