This past Friday and Saturday the Eastwood boys and girls swimming teams were ready to dominate at the 1-5A Swimming District Championships. The swimmers have been eagerly and strenuously working hard all season to make sure it was their best one yet, and win against the strong competitors they were faced with this year.
The girls swimming team has had a bumpy season with quite a few loses, yet just as many wins. Their biggest weakness throughout this season was their strong competition that showed them that they had to really work hard. "I definitely wouldn't change a thing about this experience, not even the amazing competitors we've had because I believe they made us stronger as a team. I've never felt more accomplished," said girls captain senior Christina Roman.
Overall, the girls placed third with a score of 110 behind Coronado and, not to their surprise, Franklin. Highlights of this meet were the win in the 200 -yard IM and the 100-yard butterfly from senior and captain Claire' O Beirne, and the win in the 100-yard breaststroke from captain and senior Christina Roman. "We worked really hard all season and I'm really proud of my team and how far we've come along. I couldn't be happier with the results," said O' Beirne.
The boys team has had a much smoother road on their way to victory with many consecutive wins this season. The Eastwood boys swimming team scored 223 points winning their 32nd consecutive district title. "We were so happy and tired, but we just proved that hard work really does pay off," said captain senior Ian Murphy. Many of the swimmers shined at this meet with the win in the 200-yard freestyle from junior Leo Sanchez, the win in the 200 individual medley from junior Evan Allard, the win in the 50 freestyle from senior Hector Gomez, the win in the 500 freestyle from senior Manny Griego, and the win in the 100 backstroke from sophomore Jacob Allard. "Its been a good season and I'm just glad that we proved ourselves and that we made it a great season," said captain senior Colin O' Beirne.
The Eastwood swimming teams are not done showing their abilities, they are scheduled to compete at the 1-5A Regional Swimming Event February 7 and 8.
