The Lady Trooper Varsity Soccer team had a bittersweet week. Although the girls came out victorious against the El Dorado Aztecs, they did not have the same luck at their first home game of the season against Socorro High School.
On Wednesday January 22, the girls went up against El Dorado, and after the 54th minute of the game, junior Phoebe Sandoval was able to score the winning point. The score was 1-0.
"Phoebe dropped the ball to me, moved into space, and I passed it back to her, then she made the goal," junior Genny Toscano explained.
The girls dominated possession for the majority of the game, and had more than nine shots on goal along with seven corner kicks. "Defense did very well. Offense had a lot of opportunities, but we had difficulty finishing," varsity coach Michael Cataldi said.
Saturday was not as triumphant for the team, as they lost to Socorro 0-1.
"It was an evenly matched game," Cataldi said, "we had three shots, they [Socorro] had two. We gave up an opportunistic goal."
Overall, Cataldi was pleased with the girls' performance, "I am proud of our defense. We played a solid defensive game, very consistent. Offensively, we have to get that going, but it's a work in progress. We just need to find a way to outscore our opponents."
The girls' next game is against Coronado High School on Wednesday January 29, followed by a second on Saturday, February 1st against Bel Air High School.
